About this riff
The part is built on Knopfler's hybrid fingerstyle technique: no pick, with the thumb and first few fingers snapping clean Strat notes in a swinging, syncopated pattern. The Dm–C–B♭–A chord figure is easy to grab, but the fast, flicked fills between vocal lines and the long, flowing solos demand real right-hand control and a very light touch. It's worth learning for the dynamics and fingerstyle phrasing alone, because it will expose any sloppiness in your timing.
Did you know?
Mark Knopfler first wrote "Sultans of Swing" on a National resonator guitar in an open tuning and thought it was dull. After he scraped together enough money to buy his first Fender Stratocaster, a 1961 model, in 1977, the song changed. He said it "just came alive" on that Strat and the new chord changes "fell into place", while the lyrics stayed the same. The Strat remained his main guitar for years and was basically the only guitar he played on the debut album.
