About this riff
The famous solos are built on long, vocal-style bends, wide vibrato and precise phrasing over a D major / B minor progression, so the challenge is control of pitch and touch rather than raw speed. The fast, descending run near the end of the outro solo takes real picking stamina, and getting the bends exactly in tune matters more than hitting every note. It is worth learning because it teaches how to build tension and tell a story with a small set of notes.
Did you know?
The song grew out of a wordless demo Gilmour made around his 1978 solo album, and the band argued over how to record it. Gilmour wanted a stripped-down, harder version, while Waters and producer Bob Ezrin wanted a grander, orchestral one. The compromise was to use the orchestral version for the body of the song and the harder take for the outro with the final guitar solo. Gilmour has described recording five or six solos, charting the best phrases from each, and then assembling one composite solo by jumping between faders.
