About this riff
The main riff is a stripped-down, bluesy figure built around palm-muted power chords with a distinctive stomping swagger, sitting comfortably in standard tuning at a mid-tempo 95 BPM. It's a great study in feel and dynamics rather than technical difficulty: nailing the tight muting, the deliberate spacing, and the slight shuffle groove is what makes it sound right. Beginners can learn it quickly, but locking it to the beat with the correct attack is where the real work lies.
Did you know?
Unusual for a band known for synths, the track is driven by a guitar riff, which Martin Gore first captured as a simple demo by tapping out the beat with his foot while playing the melody on an acoustic guitar. The lyrics were inspired by Priscilla Presley's memoir Elvis and Me, with Gore framing the idea of one person being another's source of hope and devotion, drawing on how Elvis was her man and mentor.
