About this riff

The intro is a fingerpicked arpeggio in open G tuning (D G D G B D), so the open strings ring out as a G chord and much of the movement comes from fretting just a few notes over that drone. The real work is in the right hand: clean, even fingerstyle picking with a steady rolling pattern, ideally on a resonator or steel-string for the intended bite. Learning it is a great way to get comfortable navigating an open tuning and building the independence needed to hold a melody line against ringing open strings.

Did you know?

Mark Knopfler wrote and recorded the intro on a 1937 National Style 'O' resonator guitar he had bought years earlier from blues guitarist Steve Phillips, with whom he'd played in a duo called the Duolian String Pickers. That same instrument later became famous as the guitar pictured on the cover of Dire Straits' 1985 album Brothers in Arms, and Knopfler reportedly paid only around £120 for it in the early 1970s.
