About this riff
The heart of this part is the fingerstyle classical guitar solo in the second half, played on nylon strings with clean arpeggiated picking and rolled chord voicings. It's a rewarding study in right-hand fingerpicking control, string dampening, and dynamics rather than speed, so learning it sharpens tone production and phrasing far more than raw technique. The rubato-leaning feel means locking timing to the 105 BPM reference is the main challenge for a clean video take.
Did you know?
David Gilmour tried to record the solo himself but wasn't happy with it, saying he could manage it with a leather pick but couldn't play it properly fingerstyle, so session guitarist Joe DiBlasi was brought in. DiBlasi has said that when he arrived at the studio there was nothing written down, and he constructed the guitar part on the spot with Gilmour and producer Bob Ezrin, with the orchestra added afterward. He was mistakenly credited as 'Ron DiBlasi' in some liner notes and on the Pink Floyd website.
