About this riff

The main riff is a single-string, palm-muted figure built around the open low E and a chromatic slide up into a bent minor-key motif, making it very approachable for beginners working on their picking hand. The real value in learning it is control: tight, consistent palm muting and clean timing at 125 BPM in standard tuning, plus the dynamic contrast between the muted intro and the fuller power-chord sections. It's an ideal piece for drilling right-hand accuracy and feel rather than raw speed.

Did you know?

Kirk Hammett came up with the riff around three in the morning while still in tour mode, having spent the day listening to Soundgarden's album Louder Than Love, and later said the riff basically just appeared out of nowhere. Crucially, his original idea was only two bars long, and it was drummer Lars Ulrich who suggested playing the first bar three times before the second, a rearrangement widely credited with turning it into the iconic hook.
