About this riff

The core groove is Joe Morello's relaxed 5/4 ride pattern with a snare/hi-hat accent that splits the bar into a 3+2 feel, played over Brubeck's two-chord vamp. Keeping the swing loose and steady while internalizing the odd meter is the real challenge, more than any technical demand. Learning it is a great gateway into playing comfortably in 5/4 and feeling odd-time subdivisions naturally.

Did you know?

Take Five was recorded on July 1, 1959, at CBS's 30th Street Studio in New York and appeared on the album Time Out. When Columbia released it as a single, the label put out a different, shorter recording that edited out most of Morello's celebrated drum solo, trimming the roughly 5:28 album version down to about 2:55.
