About this riff

The drum part sits on a driving, mid-tempo groove built around a steady quarter-note kick and a strong backbeat that has to lock tightly with Stone Gossard's syncopated main riff. The real challenge is dynamic control and consistency: keeping the verses tight and restrained, then opening up the crashes and fills into the chorus and the extended solo section without rushing. It's a great study in playing for the song and holding a rock-solid pocket rather than showing off.

Did you know?

Although Pearl Jam knocked out most of Ten in just a few takes, 'Even Flow' was the frustrating exception, reportedly requiring at least 50 takes (some accounts say over 100) and a great deal of editing to get right. Ironically, bassist Jeff Ament later felt it was a great song that ended up with one of the weaker recorded versions on the album, despite all that studio effort. The track was recorded at London Bridge Studio in Seattle in early 1991 with drummer Dave Krusen on the kit.
