Although the Police recorded most of Ghost in the Machine at AIR Studios in Montserrat, this song was built on a demo Sting cut in January 1981 at Le Studio in Canada with keyboardist Jean Roussel. The band struggled to improve on it in Montserrat, so they overdubbed drums and guitars onto the existing demo. Stewart Copeland later recalled a grumpy day of trying different versions, including a reggae one, before he simply laid the drums down on Sting's demo with Sting standing over him. When he went back through the multitracks decades later for his orchestral project, he couldn't find a well-loved drum fill near the end of the song.
