About this riff
The drum part is a steady, mid-tempo pop-rock groove built around a driving electronic drum sound rather than acoustic kit fireworks, so the challenge is consistency and pocket rather than technical complexity. It's a good part for working on locking in tightly to a click at around 113 BPM and delivering clean, evenly-spaced backbeats, with the fills kept simple and functional. Worth learning as an exercise in playing for the song and holding a machine-tight groove.
Did you know?
The song comes from Genesis' 1986 album Invisible Touch and features electronic drums by Phil Collins, matching the polished, programmed drum aesthetic the band leaned into during this era. Its famous music video used caricature puppets from the 1980s UK satirical sketch show Spitting Image, including a Phil Collins puppet.
