About this riff

The riff is a relentless, all-16th-note line played fingerstyle at a driving tempo, so the main challenge is stamina and keeping every note even and locked in. It leans on chromatic approach notes and hammer-ons to give it its signature snarl, and it's meant to be played through a fat, distorted tone rather than a clean sound. It's a great study in building right-hand endurance and clean fretting under a heavy overdrive.

Did you know?

"Hysteria" started as a soundcheck jam in Doncaster, with Matt Bellamy playing the riff in a bluesy style before Chris Wolstenholme moved it to bass and reworked it into its now-famous machine-gun sixteenth-note pattern. To get its huge distorted tone, Wolstenholme split his bass signal across three Marshall amps, one clean and two distorted, and blended in a synthesiser.
