About this riff

The bass line was originally a keyboard-bass part, so it carries synth-style phrasing that doesn't fall naturally under the fingers on an electric bass. It mixes syncopated eighth- and sixteenth-note figures, quick position shifts and constant melodic movement under the chords. It's demanding on right-hand consistency and stamina over the full 6+ minutes, and worth learning for the Stevie-style melodic, harmony-driven approach to bass. At 118 BPM, start slow and loop each section before building up.

Did you know?

Bassist Nathan Watts recorded a bass guitar line on 'Isn't She Lovely' as a guide track for Stevie Wonder. Wonder eventually replaced it with his own keyboard bass performance, which is the bass part heard on the record. Watts has said this happened on several Wonder demos, including 'Knocks Me Off My Feet'. Apart from some keyboard parts by Greg Phillinganes, every instrument on the track was played by Wonder.
