About this riff

The bass carries the melody of the song, playing a bright, repeating high-register line over the drum pattern instead of sitting underneath the guitar. The notes are simple, but the challenge is keeping the picking perfectly even and the tone clear for almost six minutes. It's a good lesson in how a bass can lead a track without any flashy technique.

Did you know?

A Forest was the first Cure record to feature Simon Gallup, who had replaced original bassist Michael Dempey after Dempsey left to join The Associates. Gallup later said his distinctive bass playing on the track was strongly inspired by The Stranglers, whose bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel was a major influence on him. The song was the last one recorded for Seventeen Seconds and became the band's first UK chart entry, reaching number 31.
