About this riff

The bassline is a walking figure in an unusual 7/4 time signature, so the main challenge is internalizing the seven-beat feel and keeping the phrasing steady as it repeats. It sits comfortably in first position with no fast passages, making it approachable technically, but the odd meter and the need to lock precisely with the count-in sound effects make it a great exercise in groove and timing.

Did you know?

The famous money sound-effects loop was built by Roger Waters from recordings of clinking coins, a cash register, tearing paper and a counting machine, spliced into a seven-beat loop that matches the song's 7/4 meter. To keep it in time, engineer Alan Parsons and the band physically cut and measured the tape with razor blades and a ruler, then joined the exact lengths together and hung the resulting loop on microphone stands around the tape machine so the band could play along to it.
