About this riff

The core of Wipe Out is Ron Wilson's driving 16th-note single-stroke drum solo, alternating between snare and toms over a steady rock beat. The challenge isn't complexity but endurance and evenness—keeping the fast single strokes clean and consistent at tempo while nailing the tom transitions. It's a great study in dynamic control and stamina, and one of the most recognizable drum breaks ever recorded.

Did you know?

The Surfaris wrote and recorded Wipe Out on the spot in 1962 because they needed a quick B-side for their intended single Surfer Joe. Ron Wilson's famous drum solo was actually a sped-up adaptation of his high school marching band's drum cadence. The manic laugh and cackled 'wipe out!' at the intro were performed by the band's manager Dale Smallin, and the cracking sound was made by breaking a piece of plywood near the microphone to imitate a snapping surfboard.
