About this riff
This is Phil Rudd at his groove-focused best: a rock-solid eighth-note hi-hat pattern with a heavy backbeat on 2 and 4, and a straightforward kick pattern that locks tight with Malcolm Young's rhythm guitar. It's technically undemanding, but the challenge is entirely in feel—keeping the pocket steady around 96 BPM without rushing, playing consistent rimshot-style backbeats, and knowing when to drop in a small fill that follows the riff rather than showing off. A great study in dynamics and 'playing for the song.'
Did you know?
The song was recorded in April–May 1980 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, the Bahamas, with producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange—it was the first AC/DC album made without late singer Bon Scott. The album's huge drum sound came partly from studio processing: engineers gated and detuned Rudd's snare using an Eventide H910 Harmonizer, with a short delay added and, notably, no compression on the kit.
