About this riff

The Lovecats is built on a bouncy, jazz-flavored walking bass line that outlines the chord changes rather than just sitting on roots, so it's great practice for connecting chord tones with chromatic passing notes and glissandos. On electric bass in standard EADG tuning at this relaxed tempo it's very playable, but the swing feel and the constant movement mean the challenge is timing and phrasing, not speed. Nailing the laid-back groove and the little slides that mimic the original upright bass sound is what makes it worth learning.

Did you know?

The famous line wasn't played on electric bass at all: producer Phil Thornalley had learned Robert Smith's bassline on electric while on tour, but when they reached Studio Des Dames in Paris, Smith pointed at an upright double bass and told him to play that instead. Thornalley had never played double bass, so he got out a tuner and put marks on the neck to find the notes in tune. Because he could barely get through two bars, he opened up two tracks and comped the final part together from overdubs.
